Nianxin's statement:

As an artist, I am deeply driven by my personal experiences and the disconnection I feel in my family life due to growing up in a same-sex family where same-sex marriage is illegal. This disconnection has sparked a personal inquiry into the question of how we as individuals attach meaning to the concept of family and how society defines it.

In my paintings, I explore this theme by incorporating less-historical elements into traditional still-life compositions. I use ※toxic§ and ※inedible§ colors alongside neutral tones, creating a sense of tension between the safe and the dangerous. The roles and boundaries of each object are ambiguous, with each part relying on and guarding against each other. Each creature shoulders different responsibilities and ignores itself, twisting and squeezing carefully to maintain balance. Yet, behind this balance lies the sinking ground, the bubble that is about to burst, and the life that is ignored.

Through my work, I aim to challenge traditional notions of family and identity and spark conversations about the complex nature of relationships and the importance of inclusivity and understanding in a changing world.
